These city dogs were more restless, more desperate, than the dogs back in the village.
— Orham Pamuk, A Strangeness in My Mind, Vintage International, 2015
These are just some of the many city dogs I’ve encountered in my travels this year. Not pictured: the pack of dogs that owned and patrolled Street 22 between Achar Sva Street and Wat Bo Road in Siem Reap on a recent visit. Those dogs were determined to keep a smaller but no less tenacious pack out of their one-block domain, the result being a never-ending dispute that could be heard regularly both day and night. I recall the trepidation I felt one morning while walking to the cafe when I found myself caught between those packs as they traded threats and accusations from opposite sides of that narrow street. Now those were truly city dogs as described by Pamuk: restless and desperate.
